I see a magenta flash on the outside of my Precept Touch when I try to lock/unlock it

This means your smart device is out of activation range for your Precept Touch. Try bringing your smart device closer to the Precept Touch when locking or unlocking. As you use the Precept Touch, it will learn where you normally keep your smart device.
